School and student body

Where is the school?

Both the main campus and the Nippori campus are in Nippori, Arakawa-ku. The nearest stations are Nippori and Mikawashima.

How many people do the school buildings accommodate?

We have our own school buildings in Nippori which can accommodate a total of 1,530 people, with capacities of 450 at Nippori campus and 1080 at the main campus.

 

How many classrooms do you have?

The main campus has 27 classrooms on six floors and the Nippori campus has 13 classrooms on six floors.

How many students do you have?

As of January 2014, we have a total enrollment of about 1,280 students with about 950 at the main campus and 330 at the Nippori campus.

What is the age range of your students?

The largest group are  in their 20s, but we enroll a wide range of students from teenagers to people in their 50s.

Tell me about when I can start and how long I will study.

With a student visa, you can enter in January, April, July, or October and enroll for at least one year and up to two years. Short-term course can be taken in three-month units.

Tell me about nationalities in the student body.

As of April 2016, student nationalities composed of 36% Chinese, 22% Vietnamese, 21% South Korean, 12% Western, 9% from other countries.

Where is your individual study space and when is it available?

Our individual study space is in the basement of the main campus and is available 24 hours a day.

What kind of off-campus learning is there?

Off-campus learning includes school entrance ceremonies, new student bus excursions (Kamakura, Enoshima), speech contests, flower-arranging classes, carrying a portable shrine (omikoshi), climbing Mt. Fuji, tea ceremony classes, mochi-pounding, graduation trips, graduation ceremonies, and more.

What do I need when entering Japan?

Passport, visa, confirmation of enrollment at the school, money, household medicines. You should find out in advance how to get to the school. 

It is advisable to bring at least ¥100,000 for immediate living expenses.

Dormitories

How many people do the school accommodate?

We have several dorms near the school campuses, accommodating about 400 students.

Can I choose a dorm?

Since our dormitories are very popular and almost full occupancy, we divide rooms to new students when current residents vacate their rooms. Although we hear your preference before entering to school, it might be difficult to fulfill it.

How are the dorm rooms furnished?

Dorm rooms include a refrigerator, bed, computer desk, chair, closet, and Internet is also available. However, student dorms do not include bedding, so you will need to bring your own or request it from the school in advance.

Can I live somewhere other than a school dorm?

Living in a dorm is optional. You can also live somewhere else if you have a friend in Japan, for example, who can accommodate you.

Scholarships

I would like to obtain a scholarship. Are there programs at Akamonkai?

Akamonkai has many scholarship programs that do not require repayment.

  • Privately Funded Foreign Student Study Scholarship Monthly 48,000 yen (for 1 year)
  • Kyoritsu Maintenance Scholarship Fund Monthly 60,000 yen (for 1 year)
  • Takayama International Education Foundation Scholarship Monthly 50,000 yen (for 1 year)
  • Mabuchi International Scholarship Foundation's scholarship Monthly 100,000 yen (for 1 year)
  • LSH Asia Shougakukai Asia Scholarship Lump Sum payment of 100,000 yen
  • Akamonkai Outstanding Achievement Scholarship Lump Sum payment of 100,000 yen

Can anyone get a scholarship?

To apply for a scholarship, you must satisfy all of the following conditions.

  • Enrolled at Akamonkai as a full-time student for at least 6 months
  • An attendance rate averaging at least 95% since admission
  • A person with excellent character and grades
  • A person who will advance to either a university, graduate school or vocational school

 *Other requirements such as nationality may apply depending on the scholarship.
